Every year before the monsoon arrived, Meera would place her collection of empty glass bottles on the windowsill of her room — seven of them, each a different size, each saved from the kitchen over the months before.
Her mother thought it was strange. Her older brother called it a waste of time. But Meera had done it every year since she was nine, ever since Nani had told her: *"Rain that falls in the month of Sawan is not just water. It carries whatever the sky has been holding back all year."*
She didn't know exactly what Nani meant. But she believed it.
The summer Meera turned fifteen, the rains were late. June passed dry and burning. July arrived slowly, reluctantly, with only a few half-hearted showers that evaporated before they could even wet the courtyard stones properly.
Her bottles stayed empty on the windowsill, and Meera found she did not know what to do with herself.
She had an exam coming. She had a friendship that was quietly ending — the kind that ends not with a fight but with fewer and fewer messages, with conversations that used to last hours now finished in three lines. She had questions about what she wanted to do with her life that felt enormous and unanswerable.
And it was not raining.
On a Wednesday night in the last week of July, she woke at 3am to the sound she had been waiting for — a deep rumble, then the smell of wet earth, then rain hammering the roof so hard she could feel the vibration through her pillow.
She ran to the window in the dark and pushed it open. The rain came in sideways, soaking her arm. She grabbed her bottles one by one and held them out into the downpour, feeling the cold water fill each one, feeling the weight change in her hand as each bottle became less empty.
She did not know why she cried a little. She was not sad — or not exactly sad. It was something more complicated, the feeling of something beginning and something ending at the same time, which is perhaps the only feeling that is really worth collecting.
By morning, all seven bottles were full. She lined them on the sill in the grey dawn light and looked at them for a long time.
The bottles were just water. She knew that. But they were also proof that waiting had not been pointless. That things you cannot control will still arrive, eventually, in their own time.
She messaged her friend. Just: *it rained last night.*
Her friend replied an hour later: *I know. I heard it too. Was thinking of you.*
The friendship did not end that summer after all.

I'm the founder of Bachpan Diaries. I started this project chasing down the small, ordinary memories of growing up in India that never seem to get written down anywhere, madaari shows, school bells, dabbas from home. I still read every story myself before it goes up.
